Day 1: Introduction to Supercomputing Workflows and Systems
Date and Time: Tuesday January 20 1-4pm
Asynchronous Lectures and Readings
Review the Asynchronous preparation material for Day 1. (See Checklist below). This material is in the Practical HPC for Engaging Course on the LLx Online course Platform.
Click "Enroll" on the top right. If you already have an account you will be enrolled. If not, you will be taken to a form to create an account. Fill out the form and click "Create your account" to create your account. Keep an eye out for a verification email and verify your account once you've received it. If you don't verify your account, you won't be able to log back in until you do. If you don't get the email, check your junk mailbox.
You should now be able to access the course. We will the assigned modules on this site. These modules must be reviewed before the live session.
In order to complete the exercises you will need an account on Engaging or another similar HPC system. It is best to use the system to plan to use for your research. If you don't have an account you can get one on Engaging by logging into Engaging OnDemand with your Kerberos.
Checklist
- Enroll in the Practical HPC Course on the LLx Online Course Platform
- If you plan to use SuperCloud for this class you can take the SuperCloud Practical HPC Course
- Create an account on Engaging by logging into Engaging OnDemand. You do not need to create an account if you plan to use another similar system for this class, but keep in mind some of the course material may not apply to your system. Course instructors can help where there are differences.

- Getting Started
- When instructed in the course:
- Log into Engaging OnDemand
- Verify that you can either:
- Log in via ssh in the terminal on your computer
- Open a terminal in ORCD OnDemand
- Complete the file transfer exercise: copy your project files to your Engaging account
- Install any packages or software that you need for your project
Day 1 Project Milestone
Run in serial on Engaging, SuperCloud, or other ORCD system. Identify your workflow.

- Start setting up your environment
