Day 4: Distributed Computing

Date and Time: Thursday January 29 1-4pm

Asynchronous Lectures and Readings

Review the Asynchronous preparation material for Day 4 (see checklist below). This material is on the Practical HPC for Engaging online course.

Checklist

  • Work through the module
    • Distributed Applications
  • Prepare your project presentation and sign up for a time slot (see below)

Day 4 Project Milestone

Continue working on scaling up. Present on your work so far. Write a report on your project.

Project Presentation

In this class we've gone over how to identify the workflow and how to begin scaling out your application based on that workflow. In this presentation we'd like to hear about what you have been able to accomplish on your project up to this point. So we have time for everyone, this should be a ~5 minute presentation with 4-5 slides (slides not required, there will be whiteboards for drawing diagrams/plots if needed). Let us know:

  • Give a general description of your application and your workflow.
    • Your project description should be a brief high-level explanation for a general audience.
  • What technology are you using (or planning to use) to scale out?
  • What have you done so far?
  • What challenges have you come across, or do you anticipate?
  • If it is available, show a scaling curve.

Be sure to cover any challenges or questions that came up during this process. We understand this may take some time depending on your application, so do what you can and let us know what you found out!

You can sign up for a slot on this page (coming soon).

Class

In class on Day 4 we will cover:

  • Q&A for Async Material
  • Distributed Example Walkthroughs
  • In-Class project work
    • Presentations or group discussions on projects
